Everything You Need to Know About AI Ads (And How to Run Them)

AI-powered digital advertising dashboard showing campaign automation, audience targeting, analytics, and marketing performance.

Last year, most conversations around AI were philosophical. This year, they’re commercial. The question is no longer: “Will AI change advertising?” The question is:

“Where do I place my budget?”

And surprisingly, many marketers don’t realise they’re already running AI ads.

First Things First: AI Ads Are Already Live

One of the biggest misconceptions is that AI advertising is still experimental. It’s not. Google is already serving ads inside: AI Overviews, AI Mode, Shopping Experiences and Google Lens. Perplexity is experimenting with sponsored recommendations. Meta is using AI to automate targeting, creative generation, audience expansion, and campaign optimisation.

The future isn’t coming. It’s here.

Not all AI ads are the same.

1. AI-Powered Ad Creation

This is the AI most marketers already use. Examples:

  • Google Performance Max
  • Meta Advantage+
  • AI-generated ad copy
  • AI-generated creative variations

2. AI-Powered Ad Delivery

This is where Meta is investing heavily. Instead of manually selecting Audiences, Placements and Interests.  AI increasingly makes those decisions for you. You provide Objective, Budget, Creative. AI fills in the rest.

3. AI-Powered Recommendations

This is the newest category. A user asks: “What’s the best CRM for a startup?”. Instead of seeing ten links, they receive a curated answer. Some recommendations may be sponsored. This is where Search begins to evolve into Conversation. And where advertising begins to evolve into Recommendation.

Google vs Meta: Two Very Different AI Strategies

Google’s Bet

Let’s start with business reality: Google’s advertising business generates hundreds of billions of dollars. Search is its most profitable asset. If users move from Search to AI Mode, Google cannot afford to lose monetisation. So instead of replacing ads… Google is rebuilding them.

Why This Matters Urgently

The battle is moving from Visibility → Recommendation very quickly. Historically, ranking first was enough. Now AI may only show one answer with 3-10 options and top recommendations. That changes the economics of attention. Google wants to own answers. Its AI strategy revolves around Search, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Shopping.

Meta’s Bet

While Google is integrating ads into AI search experiences, Meta is taking a different route. Meta already possesses something Google doesn’t:

  • User interests
  • Behavioural history
  • Social graph
  • Content consumption patterns

Meta’s AI strategy is less about search and more about recommendation. Expect AI-generated:

  • Creative variations
  • Audience expansion
  • Automated targeting
  • Conversational commerce

In many ways, Meta has been running AI-powered advertising longer than most people realise. Advantage+ Shopping, Advantage+ Audiences and AI-generated creatives are early examples of AI advertising already operating.

What About ChatGPT and Perplexity?

This is where most business owners get excited. Perplexity has already experimented with sponsored follow-up questions and sponsored recommendations.

ChatGPT is more complicated. Today, OpenAI’s primary business model remains subscriptions. However, industry reporting suggests OpenAI has explored advertising opportunities and continues to face pressure to monetise attention at scale. Whether those ads arrive next month or next year is almost irrelevant. The direction is obvious. Attention attracts monetisation.

So, should we let AI do the rest?

Short answer: No. And please don’t fire your marketer and hand ₹50 lakh budgets to an intern with ChatGPT.

The effectiveness of AI-powered delivery varies significantly by industry, audience size, purchase cycle, product complexity, and campaign objective. Meta has published multiple case studies showing Advantage+ campaigns delivering lower acquisition costs and stronger returns compared to traditional setups.

At the same time, high budget campaigns continue to run on manual audience segmentation, exclusions, geo-control, and layered targeting. They give better control on how audiences behave, how funnels convert, and how different customer segments respond.

It’s important for business owners to remember that the interface has changed. Humans haven’t. People buy based on trust, emotion, relevance, timing, and perception. Be it manual campaigns or AI powered, one must keep track of your customer journeys, positioning, algorithms, audience behaviour, and what actually drives decisions.

So, What Should You Do Today?

Three things.

1. Turn On Performance Max

If you’re not testing it, start.

2. Improve Your Product Feed

AI Shopping depends heavily on data quality.

3. Experiment With Advantage+

Advantage+ works beautifully in some industries. I have particularly seen good success with D2C brands, or when you are seeking Brand awareness.

Venture Lift’s Take

The AI advertising conversation reminds me of Google Ads in the early 2000s. Some marketers ignored it. Some experimented. A small group learned the platform before everyone else arrived. Those early advantages compounded for years.

AI advertising won’t replace SEO or PPC. And it won’t replace good marketing. But it will change how customers discover brands. And that’s usually where the biggest opportunities live.
