Ads in AI: The Next Google Ads Moment?

AI-powered digital advertising concept with search, analytics, and marketing automation visualized through futuristic technology.

A few years ago, when we wanted to know something, we searched. Today, we ask.

And that small shift changes everything.

For nearly two decades, Google trained us to think in keywords: “Best hotels in Goa”, “Hair fall treatment”, “Marketing agency near me”. That became the foundation of:

  • SEO
  • Google Ads
  • Content Marketing
  • Entire digital marketing careers

Search → Results → Clicks

Now AI is changing the interface. Instead of searching, we’re chatting. Instead of browsing ten links, we’re receiving one answer. And naturally, the next question becomes:

If Google had ads, would AI have ads too?

The answer is of’course yes and It’s already happening. Google is actively serving ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode. Perplexity has launched sponsored questions and recommendations. Industry reports suggest OpenAI has also begun exploring commercial models.

AI search is no longer a future advertising surface. It is an advertising surface.

Human Psychology Hasn’t Changed

Let’s start here.

Most technology discussions focus on technology. Most marketers know the real game is human behaviour. Humans still:

  • Have problems
  • Seek information
  • Compare options
  • Need recommendations
  • Buy solutions

The psychology remains identical. Only the interface changes.

The first generation of Digital Marketers have seen: Search becoming social. Social becoming video. And now, Videos are becoming conversational.

From Search Economy to Answer Economy

Google’s model was: You searched. Google showed options. Advertisers paid to appear higher amongst the options. AI changes that dynamic.

Instead of: “Here are 10 options.” You now get: “Here’s what I recommend.” This creates a completely different advertising environment. Because the battle is no longer: “How do I rank?” It’s becoming: “How do I become the answer?”

So What AI Ads Actually Look Like?

They’re already here. Ask Google AI Mode or AI Overviews a question like: “What’s the best CRM for a startup?” Instead of showing ten links, AI gives you a curated answer. Increasingly, some recommendations may be sponsored, clearly marked as ads, but embedded naturally within the response (and personalised – since AI knows more context beyond search).

If you’re wondering how to actually run AI ads, what campaign types Google is prioritising, how AI Shopping works, and whether you should be using Performance Max today- I will cover that in my next article: “Everything You Need to Know About AI Ads (And How to Start Running Them).” Stay tuned.

The AI Shift Is Also Impacting Paid Ads

Recent industry studies found that when Google’s AI Overviews appear, paid ad click-through rates can drop from 21.27% to 9.87%. Why? Because users often get enough information directly within the AI response. This is part of a larger trend known as Zero-Click Search.

In 2024, nearly 58.5% of Google searches ended without a click. People searched. People got answers. People moved on. The journey ended on the search page itself. AI is accelerating that behaviour.

What This Means For Marketers and Business Owners

The game is shifting. SEO is still relevant. A new layer has further emerged.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation

The goal isn’t just visibility. The goal is recommendation, to be “the answer”. Marketers will need to think about:

  • Authority
  • Citations
  • Brand mentions
  • Structured content
  • Expertise signals

Because AI doesn’t crawl. It synthesises. Meaning: Google finds information and shows it. AI combines multiple sources, signals and perspectives into an answer (you would like).

Top 5 Things You Can Do To Become More AEO- Friendly Today.

1. Own A Clear Position

If AI had to describe your company in one sentence, what would it say? If that’s unclear, start there.

2. Create Content That Answers Questions

Instead of talking about yourself. Think along the line of answering customer questions and pain points.

Cheat Code: A well-written FAQ section in a website is your most rewarding AEO shortcut.

3. Build Third-Party Credibility

AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Consider PR, Podcasts, Articles, Interviews, Awards, UGC Mentions, Reviews and active social media presence.

4. Become Known For Something

Generalists struggle. Specialists get recommended. The clearer your association, the stronger your AEO.

Cheat Code: AI knows the context beyond search, hence gives recommendations that it believes is most suitable for you. The more personalised, detailed and specific, the more it will win.

5. Write Like Humans Speak

AI conversations are natural. Your content should be too. Ironically, the rise of AI may reward brands that look and sound more human.

Venture Lift’s Take

We’re watching a familiar movie. When SEO arrived in the early 2000s, businesses asked: “Do I really need SEO?” The answer became yes. When social media arrived in the 2010s, businesses asked: “Do I really need content?” The answer became yes. Now we’re entering the AI era. And businesses are asking: “Do I really need AEO?”

You already know the answer.
